Winter is my favourite season. It never used to be, but as I grow older I find that I appreciate the solace and the introspection that cold weather can bring. I also appreciate being able to layer on the kind of clothing that allows me to eat as many buttery crumpets as I want to without showing off the results. Well, for now in any case.
Since I’m all about scaling down one’s wardrobe into a capsule collection that contains a uniform consisting of the clothing that suits you best, three items have really taken my fancy of late – mainly due to their comfort, their versatility and their minimalistic style. In the curated cupboard, aesthetics are key and so I tend to spend a little more on pieces that I deem to be quality investment buys. You know, like shoes.
Here the kind of shoes I’m talking about would perhaps be better at home on a farm (I’m working towards this particular dream) but for now they are the perfect cold weather clothing option for an afternoon spent on a decidedly windswept stretch of beach along the Cape West Coast. Made from high-quality rubber, my Hunter boots are truly a friend for foul weather – entirely waterproof, surprisingly warm and durable enough to go wading out into the shallows to better photograph swimming seagulls. As one does. Although pricey (we have our wonderful exchange rate to thank for that) the unsurpassable quality of these boots mean that I’ll only likely ever have to own two pairs over the course of my lifetime – and if that’s not investment-worthy then I don’t know what is.
My second great buy of the season is my Puffer Gilet from ZARA. Soft as it is warm, I love the metallic detailing of the silver zips and press studs – it takes the gilet from casual to cool to minutes and I’m able to wear it dressed up with a pair of loafers or keep it athleisure with sneakers. I prefer a body warmer to a full coat as Capetonian winters tend not to get overly cold and often a coat is simply too hot to wear for any length of time. I like to layer the gilet with a beautiful ribbed knit sweater that I found on sale last season at Country Road. With it’s Scandi detailing in soft charcoal grey, this piece is my go-to layering item on days when the sun decides that it deserves a holiday.
